MOLE Talpa europaea
·
The photographer is not in the habit
of photographing captive animals but a rare opportunity to photograph this European Mole Talpa europaea (many years ago, hence the scans of dusty
transparencies – circa 1982 – it was
hard to distinguish between the dust-spots and the dirt on the photographer’s
hand!) was too good to refuse as it had managed to become stranded on an
asphalt road in North Wales. It was going round in circles and needed to be rescued
for its own safety. This animal’s
impressively powerful digging equipment, tiny eyes and thick, short and dense
fur may all be seen in these pictures, to date the only images of this species
that the photographer has managed to obtain. Their subterranean life-style
doesn’t make it easy.
