GREY DAGGER MOTH Acronicta psi or DARK
DAGGER MOTH Acronicta tridens
·
The Grey Dagger Moth Acronicta psi
and Dark Dagger Moth A. tridens (Noctuidae, Acronictinae)
are impossible to separate in the field without examination of the male’s genitalia,
although the larvae are readily distinguishable, so there are perhaps parallels
with Clouded Yellow Butterflies Colias spp. Like many members of
this family, they are remarkably well camouflaged when resting on tree-bark. The
above photograph, scanned from a transparency, could be either of these two closely
related species, but it is not possible to determine which
one. Both are common and widespread, and their larvae will eat a wide variety
of food-plants.
