·
The colourful, day-flying, Purple-barred Yellow
Moth Lythria cruentaria syn. purpuraria
(Geometridae, Sterrhinae)
is a common European moth with rather distinctive colouration, and the
photographer, sadly, was unable to obtain a completely clear view of the
individual illustrated above without interference from an annoying blade of
grass when attempting to pursue it over rough ground in France! There are no
definite records from the UK. The markings of this species appear to be quite inconsistent,
and some reference images show a clearer contrast between the colours and the
extent of the pinkish-purple bars on the wings varies considerably. The larvae
feed on Sheep’s Sorrel Rumex acetosella.
