BUTTONED SNOUT MOTH Hypena rostralis

·          The Buttoned Snout Hypaena rostralis (Noctuidae, Hypeninae) is a small and rather inconspicuous insect. It is a relatively uncommon moth, although possibly under-recorded, and worn or faintly marked individuals may be difficult to identify to species, although the relatively broad ‘snout’ from which the vernacular generic name of the Hypeninae and their allies has been derived is a highly recognisable characteristic in this species, and the forewings are also comparatively narrow. The larvae are found on wild and cultivated hops, and the moths hibernate as adults. The images above have been scanned from old transparencies.
