The Oak Beauty Moth Biston strataria (Geometridae,
Ennominae) is normally on the wing by the end
of February, but the freshly emerged male of this common and widespread
woodland species photographed above was found on a balmy 3rd
February, adding further weight to the argument that anthropogenic climate
change is influencing the phenology of British wildlife. Any loss of synchronisation
between insects and their foodplants or of predator-prey relationships must be
a matter for concern! The larvae of this beautifully marked moth will
feed on a wide range of broadleaved trees and shrubs.
