·         The August Thorn Moth Ennomos quercinaria (Geometridae, Ennominae) is one of several rather similar, and therefore tricky to identify ‘Thorn’ species, (so hopefully the identification is correct!). The moths in this family tend to rest with their wings only partially opened, so obtaining upperside photographs can be tricky. As the female shown above had settled on a window, at least it was possible to photograph her underside through the glass. The larvae feed on the leaves of Oak Quercus spp., and other deciduous trees.
