LIGHT
EMERALD MOTH Campaea margaritata
·
The pale green ground colour and the gently
sweeping pale stripes are characteristic of the attractive Light Emerald
Moth Campaea margaritata (Geometridae, Ennominae),
enabling this relatively large species to be separated from all other green
geometer moths with a superficially similar appearance belonging to the Geometrinae. The photographed example was clearly
freshly emerged, as the green colour is reported to fade to off-white within
several days after emergence. Quite why this should be the case is unclear. The
leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs are eaten by the larvae – surely (and
literally!) a recipe for success.
