The Straw Underwing Moth Thalpophila
matura (Noctuidae,
Amphipyrinae) is a familiar and widespread insect
that is often attracted to light. The markings, as is so often the case with
moths, are variable in shade and intensity! The upper- and (rather featureless)
undersides are shown of a moth that had settled on a window. There is always a risk of disturbance, so it is sensible to
photograph the ‘A’ side first in order to confirm an identification! The larvae
feed on a range of common grasses.
