MAGPIE MOTH Abraxas
grossulariata
·
The typical form of the Magpie Moth Abraxas grossulariata is
one of the most distinctive (and therefore easily identifiable) British
macro-moths, belonging to the family Geometridae – although the markings may be variable and there
are several rare named forms with more extensive areas of yellow or black on
the wings. This individual was attracted indoors by artificial light. It was
photographed and then released the following morning, by which time some scales
had been lost, settling immediately in a very convenient position for another
photograph to be taken. Just the one as it was disturbed by the flash, and it flew
away.
