19 – Tortrix Moths
TORTRIX MOTH Agapeta hamana
·
There are approximately 400 species of micro-moth
in the large family Tortricidae in the UK
alone, and many of them are small, elusive in their habits and difficult to
identify in the field. It is probably the case that most reference photographs
of these insects will have needed to have been taken in captivity or that they
will be illustrations of set specimens. Most of these moths lack vernacular
names and it is likely that comparatively little detail is known of their
life-histories as they are difficult to observe. The markings of Agapeta hamana are variable, but there are certain
consistent features of the golden-brown, darker patterns of scales on the
forewings that should hopefully enable most unworn specimens to be identified
to species. This individual had been attracted to artificial light at a
location in North Wales.
