The Large Emerald Moth Geometra
papilionaria, as alluded to by the specific
name, is prone to rest in butterfly-like fashion (as shown in the final two
images of this near pristine male, photographed after having been attracted to
artificial light in Powys, North Wales.). There are nine other species of
Emerald Moths in the same family (Geometridae),
but the Large Emerald is significantly bigger than the others. Interestingly
these ten species have been classified in nine genera, so although there may be
commonality in having green colouration of the scales there are presumably significant
genetic and/or morphological differences between them.
