SNOUT MOTH Hypena proboscidalis

·         The Snout Moth Hypena proboscidalis (family Erebidae - Noctuid moths are in the process of being reclassified in the light of DNA analysis findings) is one of the most recognisable of British moths because of the extended palps and the distinctive shape of the forewings. Some other members of the same subfamily (Hypeninae) also possess long palps, albeit on a smaller scale. The illustrations above are of a summer generation adult of this common and widespread insect, brighter and larger than second brood Snouts. This individual had been attracted to artificial light at a site in Powys, North Wales.
