The handsome
Poplar Hawk Moth Laothoe populi (Sphingidae) is a large and impressive insect. It is also
distinctive, and identification therefore ought to be straightforward. The
above photographs have been scanned from transparencies and they show a member
of this species in a typical resting position, with the forewings swept back
and the hindwings projecting laterally. Hawk moths employ flash colouration to
deter predatory birds, achieving this by exposing colourful markings on their
hindwings.
