The Bright-line
Brown-eye Moth Lacanobia oleracea (Noctuidae, Hadeninae), also
sometimes referred to as the Tomato
Moth (as their
larvae may eat the fruit) is frequently attracted to artificial light. The
“bright-line” of this noctuid moth is presumably the white zigzag close to the
wing margin containing the ‘W’ that helps observers to distinguish this species
from its near relatives. This is a widespread and successful species in the UK,
exploiting a wide range of larval foodplants. Somebody in the entomological
world must have a sense of humour as there is another species called the Brown-line Bright-eye Mythimna conigera! Perhaps there should be some sympathy proffered to
those responsible for the nomenclature of moths, both vernacular and
scientific, as it must be difficult to find sufficient distinctively
descriptive names for creatures that often closely resemble one another!
