Moths 34 – Brussels Lace Moths
BRUSSELS
LACE MOTH Cleorodes lichenaria
·
The appearance of the Brussels Lace Moth Clerodes
lichenaria would appear to be quite variable, and the markings
of the individual shown above (scanned from an old transparency taken in
France) would seem to lie at the darker end of the spectrum, the identification
having been confirmed from the shape of the black, zigzag lines. The moth had
been attracted to artificial light. In common with many other members of the Geometridae the markings are cryptic and intended to blend in
with the background of tree bark, rendering the insect invisible to avian eyes.
This subterfuge is less successful when resting on cream-painted embossed wallpaper!
The larvae feed on lichens, as inferred by the specific name. Locally
distributed in the UK.
