First impressions of the Buff-tip Moth Phalera bucephala (Notodontidae) may be misleading – as indeed they are intended to
be, for when at rest this insect has evolved to bear an uncannily close
resemblance to a snapped Birch Betula
spp. twig to
confuse would be predators! The third of this sequence of photographs
illustrates this deceit to particularly good effect and the subterfuge is
probably at its most convincing when the moth is at rest in leaf-litter. The
Buff-tip Moth may be attracted by artificial light, and it is common and
widespread in the UK.
