OAK YELLOW UNDERWING MOTH Catocala nymphagoga

·         The beautiful Oak Yellow Underwing Moth Catocala nymphagoga (Erebidae) is common in the Oak Quercus spp. woods of southern Europe but historically only an occasional migrant to the UK where records have been spread over a wide geographical area. However, there is evidence to suggest that there has been an increase in sightings recently, so if the climate continues to warm up further there is every possibility that it might spread its range northwards and become established at suitable British Oak woodland sites. This smartly marked moth appears to be less reluctant to show the bright flash colouration of its hindwings than some of the other Underwing moths. There are several similar species.
