The distinctive black-and-yellow larvae of the Cinnabar Moth Tyria jacobaeae (Arctiidae) are a familiar sight on Ragwort Senecio jacobaea. Their colour pattern is recognised by predatory
birds as advertising their distastefulness – and indeed they are, as they will
have consumed alkaloids from their host plants during their development. These chemicals
are also retained as a chemical defence in the tissues of the striking
black-and-red, day-flying adults, with their bright colours also indicating
they are unpalatable and to be avoided. This moth has been artificially
introduced to several countries to control Ragworts.
