SMALL ELEPHANT HAWK MOTH Deilephila porcellus (m)

·         As implied by the vernacular name, the Small Elephant Hawk Moth Deilephila porcellus (Sphingidae) is considerably smaller than the closely related Elephant Hawk Moth D. elpenor. The markings are less sharply defined in the former but the overall impression for both is that they are strikingly pink moths. The male illustrated on this page was still in very good condition when photographed in the South of France where it had been attracted to artificial light.
