GARDEN
TIGER MOTH Arctia caja
·
The early stages of the life-history of the handsome Garden
Tiger Moth Arctia caja
(Arctiidae) have been
unable to cope well with anthropogenic climate change (temperature/humidity)
and this moth is nowhere near as common as it used to be in some former haunts,
including London where it was formerly an abundant insect, as winters are now
too warm and wet. The photographer can recall a time when it might have been
necessary to watch his step because of the risk of standing on the moth’s very
hairy and mobile ‘woolly bear’ larvae. Sadly, this is no longer the case, hence
the need to have illustrated this page using scanned transparencies rather than
new digital photographs. However, the Jersey
Tiger Moth Euplagia quadripunctaria has been
expanding its range and this moth has been seen with increasing frequency since
its arrival in the London area circa 2010.
