LOBSTER MOTH Stauropus fagi (m)

·         The Lobster Moth Stauropus fagi, family Notodontidae (Heterocampinae), is easy to recognise when at rest because of the protrusion of its hindwings. The vernacular name has nothing to do with the appearance of the adult, referring to the distinctive and rather strange shape of the larvae. These feed on a variety of deciduous trees. The above example was photographed in the Vendée, France.
