LEOPARD MOTH Zeugera pyrina (m)                                                                          LEOPARD MOTH Zeugera pyrina (m)

·         The Leopard Moth Zeugera pyrina (Cossidae, Zeuzerinae) is distinctive in appearance, with black-spotted, semi-transparent wings and six large black spots on its thorax. The feathered antennae of the males are rather beautiful, but these intricate structures have a pragmatic purpose as they possess large surface areas to enable their owners to detect pheromone molecules being emitted by potential mates. The wood-boring larvae are long lived, taking two to three years to develop inside the woody stems of their food-plants, including a broad range of species, some of which may be of commercial value, for example, Apple Malus spp. trees growing in orchards. As the adults do not feed, this stage of their life cycle is short.
