BLACK V MOTH Arctornis l-nigrum

·         There appears to have been some conflict between the attributors of the vernacular and scientific names of the Black V Moth Arctornis l-nigrum (Lymantriidae) regarding the identity of the distinctive black character adorning the forewings. Perhaps the link to either is tenuous, but there should be little difficulty in identifying this species regardless unless the scales have been worn away. The silky white wings of freshly emerged specimens have been described as greenish, but the veins of this example (probably a male as it had been attracted to light) appear to have possessed a cyan tint, which with the absence of any scale damage suggested that its emergence had been recent. The moth in the photographs was photographed in the South of France and it has been recorded as an occasional immigrant to the UK.
