The Lesser
Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing Moth Noctua janthe, family Noctuidae (Noctuinae), is a common British species, distinguished from
other Underwings by the pale collar behind its head. It is often the case that
the eponymous yellow underwings, hidden when a moth is at rest, will only be
seen as flash colouration when it takes flight, so the exact pattern of the
yellow and black markings probably won’t be clearly visible unless the insect
is taken captive. This is one of the smaller Yellow Underwings and the larvae
can feed on a variety of foodplants.
