The Scarce
Umber Moth Agriopis aurantaria (Geometridae) is inappropriately named as it is quite a common
and widely distributed species. Their larvae will feed on a variety of
foodplants, and the females are flightless, meaning that the will ned to be
located by the males to reproduce. Fortunately, the antennae of the male are
feathered, and they therefore possess a large surface area when detecting
wind-borne pheromones that have been emitted by their potential mates. The
illustrations, unsurprisingly, are of a male, and a freshly emerged one without
any evidence of scale damage. The flight season extends for the final three
months of the year, and this one was found in mid-November.
