Moths 75 – Mother of Pearl Moths
MOTHER
OF PEARL MOTH Pleuroptya ruralis
·
A slightly opalescent sheen may be visible on the
wings of the Mother of Pearl Moth Pleuroptya
ruralis (a
relatively large micro-moth belonging to the family Crambidae) when observed from some angles. The darker, wavy
lines vary in contrast with the rather plain (but variable) ground colour – a pale
beige in the example shown above, but other examples may be greyer or darker,
with more conspicuous markings. The larvae of this common and widespread moth
feed mainly on Stinging
Nettle Urtica dioica, and sucker Elms Ulmus spp. may also be used as larval food-plants. Adults are
readily attracted to artificial light.
