The Lime
Hawk Moth Mimas tiliae, family Sphingidae (Smerinthinae) has distinctive (if variable) markings, both in
the shades of brown or green and their extent, and the shape of the hind
margins of the forewings is also unlike that of any of the other British hawk
moths. The larvae feed on the leaves of Limes
Tilia spp. and several
other deciduous trees. These moths may be noticed resting on tree trunks and
walls, often close to their site of emergence (the fully grown larvae climb
down and wander off to pupate, so they are sometimes encountered on the ground
prior to pupating in the soil). It is there worthwhile examining avenues or
plantations of Lime during the late spring and early summer to try to locate
these splendid insects whilst they are still in pristine condition.
