A female Oak
Eggar Moth Lasiocampa quercus (Lasiocampidae),
photographed in the South of France, is illustrated above. Males of this
sexually dimorphic species are smaller and darker, with feathered antennae, and
a greater contrast between the pale bands and the ground colour. A larger and
darker subspecies L. quercus callunae has been
allocated the vernacular name of Northern Eggar. There are
also intermediate forms. In exposed heathland and moorland habitats the larvae
feed mainly on heathers Calluna, Erica spp., but elsewhere
a broader variety of plants are exploited by this widespread species.
