The eponymous wing-shape of the Round-winged Muslin Moth Thumatha senex (Arctiidae, Lithosiinae) is a useful identification feature of an otherwise
rather unremarkable moth, the other being the presence of a dark spot on each
forewing and sometimes rows of smaller black dashes that are only just visible on
the example shown above. The only likely confusion species is the Muslin Footman Moth Nudaria
mundana (not
a particularly fair specific name!), but this species has more transparent
wings and crosslines on the forewings. This moth is associated with damp
habitats, and the larvae have been described as feeding on lichens, mosses, and
possibly algae. Unsurprisingly, in the light of this information, the
photographs were taken in North Wales – although to be fair, the weather was
hot and fine at the time!
