SCORCHED CARPET MOTH Ligdia adustata

·         The Scorched Carpet Moth Ligdia adustata (Geometridae, Ennominae) illustrated above was photographed in France, and it appears to have lost an argument with an artificial light – missing scales on top of the thorax is a common feature observed in moths that have collided repeatedly with light bulbs! The wing-pattern of this species is distinctive, so identification should be straightforward. There is an additional appeal, as the larvae of this moth feed on Spindle Euonymus europaeus, one of the most attractive of trees.
