The Yellow Shell Moth Camptogramma bilineata (Geometridae, Larentiinae) is
frequently encountered during the day, usually when inadvertently disturbed by
walking, and it is sometimes attracted to artificial light at night, as
illustrated above. Once disturbed, the moth will normally attempt to secrete
itself in vegetation after a short flight, so taking photographs may not be
easy – once followed one will usually repeat this performance. The strength of
the white and dark wavy markings of this familiar insect varies in intensity, as
does the ground colour, and several subspecies have been identified. This species
is widely distributed and capable of utilising a variety of habitat types. The
larvae can feed on a variety of low-growing plants.
