In recent years the conspicuous day-flying Scarlet Tiger Moth Callimorpha diminula (Arctiidae, Arctiinae) has been extending its range northwards from its
former southern and south western strongholds in response to anthropogenic
climate change, mirroring a phenomenon that has already happened to the Jersey Tiger Moth Euplagia
quadripunctaria, but that has alarmingly occurred in parallel with
the collapse of many well established populations of the familiar Garden Tiger Moth Arctia
caja, an
insect that has shown itself to be very sensitive to changes in humidity and
temperature during the early stages of larval development. In the London area
where A. caja used to be found in abundance,
most sightings are now of Jersey Tiger Moths, and it may be predicted that
Scarlet Tiger Moths will soon be joining them in suitably damp habitats where
their larvae will be capable of feeding on a variety of foodplants. The above
photographs were taken at a site on the Dorset coast.
