The Passenger Moth Dysgonia algira (Noctuidae, Catocalinae) is a highly
distinctive European and North African species that has been recorded as an
occasional immigrant to the UK. If found, it will be easy to identify. Note
that the shades of brown may be variable. The origin of the rather mysterious vernacular
name is something of a mystery unless it had been discovered as a stowaway –
but as is always the case with larger moths it needed to be called something! If
there is an obscure reference to the shape of the wing-markings, any
significance has escaped the author. This moth is readily attracted to
artificial light, and the larvae can feed on a variety of food-plants.
