The Oak
Hook-tip Moth Watsonalla binaria (Drepanidae) is one of eight members of this family to be found
in Europe, with most also occurring in the UK. The males are readily attracted
to artificial light. The shape and patterning of the wings are distinctive, but
there is some variation in the ground colour and the intensity and size of the
black wing-marking, sexual dimorphism (females are larger and paler, with yellowish
hindwings – although some of the Swiss males shown in the photographs share
this characteristic), and an angle-dependent violet sheen may be seen on the
wings of freshly emerged specimens. The above photographs were taken in
Switzerland and France. The larvae feed on the leaves of common and widespread deciduous
trees, including Oak Quercus
spp., Beech Fagus sylvatica, Birch Betula
spp. and Alder Alnus spp.
