PURPLE THORN MOTH Selenia tetralunaria (m)

·         The Purple Thorn Moth Selenia tetralunaria (Geometridae, Ennominae) may easily be confused with two other members of the same genus (the Lunar Thorn S. lunularia and Early Thorn S. dentaria), and as there are differences between the adults of the first and second generations of S. lunularia (plus regional variations) and S. tetralunaria, the markings will need to be checked closely against known references. In fact, an old misidentification of S. dentaria was exposed when compiling the images for these Moths pages – not helped by the fact that its wings were being held in a position more typical of the partly opened stance normally adopted by S. tetralunaria when at rest! The larvae are able to feed on a wide range of deciduous trees.
