EIGHTEEN-SPOT
LADYBIRD Myrrha octodecimguttata
·
The
Eighteen-spot Ladybird Myrrha octodecimguttata
above was photographed in captivity, using transparency film, for one of the
colour plates in Roger Hawkins’ excellent ‘Ladybirds of Surrey’.
The scanned image is therefore of a poorer quality than modern digital
photographs. This is a locally distributed and elusive insect, inhabiting the
upper branches of Scots (and possibly other) Pines Pinus spp.,
so it may require some degree of determination to find it. Away from pinewoods,
one is more likely to locate the similar Cream-spot Ladybird Calvia quattuordecimguttata, illustrated elsewhere on this
web site.
