The Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa flavipes
is an *uncommon transatlantic vagrant but sometimes these elegant little waders
will overwinter in the UK if they have been blown off-course by strong westerly
winds. The subject of these photographs has been spending the winter of 2018-9
at Lodmoor in Weymouth and occasionally visiting Radipole Lake and it has proven to be a popular attraction
for birdwatchers. At the time of writing (March 2019) it is still present and
beginning to acquire its summer plumage. Whether it will successfully migrate
or return to these locations is not known – but it would be nice if it did!

*According to ‘Britain’s Birds An identification guide to
the birds of Britain and Ireland’ Hume, Still, Swash, Harrop &
Tipling, Princeton Press 2016 ISBN 978-0-691-15889-1 (an excellent
reference and part of the very useful WILDGuides series) there have
been a total of about 500 records of T. flavipes within this geographical region.
