Skeins of Pink-footed Geese Anser
brachyrynchus are a familiar overhead sight
during the winter months, particularly the north, eastern, northwestern UK, and
southeastern Eire. Their impending arrival will often be betrayed by their almost
incessant calling before they are seen. They are frequently to be observed
grazing on lowland farmland, estuaries, and saltmarshes, and these feeding
sites are of considerable importance for this species. During the summer these
geese breed in the tundra of eastern Greenland and Iceland. This species has
been extending its range, probably in response to altering climatic conditions
associated with anthropogenic global warming, and there is an almost distinct eastern
population that overwinters in northern Europe and breeds on archipelagos in
the Arctic Ocean.
