Fieldfares Turdus pilaris and Redwings Turdus iliacus (illustrated
elsewhere on this web site) are collectively known as ‘winter thrushes’ as
these northern visitors only spend the coldest months of the year living in the
UK and they are also frequently to be found in mixed flocks. Although they feed
on invertebrates if conditions are suitable they will seek out berries and
other fruits during cold spells. These handsomely marked birds may visit
gardens and they will readily eat apples or pears provided for them by
altruistic gardeners.
