·         The above illustrations are of male Yellow-crowned Bishops or Weavers Euplectes afer in their eye-catching breeding plumage. One can only presume that this finery also makes them extremely visible to raptors! The photographs were taken near to the Tagus Estuary in Portugal where this sub-Saharan African species has been introduced and some (for example the final shot) have been adjusted to bring out the plumage detail and the eyes as the deep black feathers are particularly photo-opaque (a comparison of the final two images will illustrate the difference) and they would not have shown up otherwise. The birds were deliberately underexposed against a dark background for part of this sequence to prevent over-exposure as the plumage looked superb in this light but the depth of the colours could have been lost without compensation. These very mobile and apparently rather skittish little birds were clearly very much at home in the reed-beds and they were photographed through a car window. Attempts to photograph the females were doomed to failure! With thanks to Bernardo Barreto for providing both the transport and the ornithological expertise.
