This is a heavily cropped image of a rare female Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus seen
on Shetland where there is a small breeding colony of these birds. The
photographer was operating from a considerable distance away under supervision
and working inside a hide to avoid any disturbance of this stunning little
wader (note the relative size of the splash from a raindrop!). These birds are
of particular interest because of the role-reversal of the sexes which is quite
uncommon amongst birds.
